Interview with Ezgi Nadir (English ver.)

Q. Welcome to u1 gallery. We are so grateful to be able to interview you. Could you introduce yourself? How did you begin creating art?

A. It's Ezgi from Turkey. Born in Istanbul. I am a full time artist. My journey begins with my childhood. I felt like I never fit in anywhere in my life. When I was child education system wasn't good for me. I always wanted to experienced. but the system didn't allow this. That's why I didn't care much about success in education. so I isolated myself. At these years an art teacher focused on me. I have always seen the support of art teachers in my education life. At he age of 17 I decided to study art.

Finally I was thinking that's it ,this is me! I am going to be an artist. But University did not meet my expectations. The same education system was in there again. After graduation I started to master degree and thats it. I couldn't stand it. I left it. Because the system always there I decided to make my art as a full time artist alone. I believe that art education is a bullshit.

Q. Could you describe one artwork or series from your oeuvre that you feel it was pivotal in your career?

A. All series are really special for me. Because we can assume them like stairs. after each series and work I do, the next series feeds off it. I don't always work in series, in some studies it may come out as a single study.

I think there's a special one I can talk about. A series I designed in 2013. but i only painted one. the name "Lift the veil of mystery" has been waiting for 10 years. I don't think it's time to work yet. This Series is about some people hiding all the truth from people for the sake of money.

Q. Could you describe one artwork or series from your oeuvre that you feel it was pivotal in your
career?

A. When I think of subjects in the world that bother me, or when I come across anything related to it, my creation process begins. There are a lot of things around me that bother me, so I have no ideational difficulty. I always find something to criticize. sketching process follows these ideas. If an idea triggers other ideas, I also make sketches of new series in advance, sometimes I make sketches of the works I will do 5 years later. There are many variations of the sketches I make for each work. My way of expressing myself is more like symbolic. I don't like direct narration. I used to do expressionist work. I turned that expression into symbols. In fact, although they seem very controlled, they are not. And what I care about is emotion. Whatever my way of expression, it is very important that I put the emotion into it.

Q. Are there any artists or works that have influenced you?

A. There are many artists who have influenced me, but the most important ones are artists such as Sandro Botticelli, Rogier Van Der Weyden, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Rothko. As a period, Renaissance and expressionism are my favorite movements. I really like the works that have unique aesthetic features and contain many emotions but mysterious feelings in their content. They really affect me.

Q. Where do you get the inspiration for your work? What inspires you, where do the ideas come from?

A. I work in two ways. first, I am inspired by myself, and second, I am inspired by the things around me that are disturbing. The part where I get inspired by myself;

I can write with both hands and especially after I started playing the piano, I started to feel the presence of my brain more. As a child, I was very interested in textures, insects and animals in nature. I still collect materials from nature and use them in my work. The things that bother me are; more societal and global issues. Things that interest all people inspire me.

Q. What do you hope that the audience takes away from your art?

A. You can think of my work as a warning. I hope the audience can see my thoughts. For example, if I give an example, I hope the audience sees what awaits us if we focus too much on money and wealth.

I'm working on a lot of similar topics. I especially like to focus on the death theme. Because everyone lives by damaging this world without thinking that they will die. I always try to give the message that we are mortal. Everything is temporary. In fact, even if I do something unrelated to death, I insert the death to everywhere so that it disturbs people. but I want to give this to the audience in more aesthetic ways, not with bad visuals.

Q. What is your dream project? Could you tell us your plans and aspirations as an artist?

A. I don't have a dream project for now. I just have so many sketches. I created the material that I can study for at least 15/20 years. Usually, artists plan a project and bring it to life. While I was preparing the sketches for each series I made, I made the plans for the next series, I did not bring any of them to life and this took years. I only showed a very, very small part of them. The reason why I do such a thing; Ideas came to my mind instantly, so I started drawing so I wouldn't forget them. If I had focused myself on working for a series, I would have been missing out on a lot of ideas. in conclusion

My wish is to present these works to the audience by reconsidering and developing them. My aspiration is to keep working and learn while working.
