Georgia O’Keeffe – "Flowers and Deserts: Exploring the Essence of Nature"

A vast petal fills your vision. It is no longer just a flower but an entire world of shifting colors and fluid forms. Georgia O’Keeffe did not simply paint nature—she redefined how we see it, revealing the hidden rhythms and intimate details that often go unnoticed. O’Keeffe’s Life and Artistic Journey Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) was born in Wisconsin, USA, and had a deep love for nature from an early age. She studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York, initially mastering realism. However, she soon moved beyond traditional artistic conventions to develop her own distinctive style. From an early age, O’Keeffe was captivated by nature, yet she did not simply depict it—she sought to distill its essence. Her move away from realism was not just an artistic choice but a reflection of her desire to convey the profound emotional impact of the landscapes she loved. This pursuit became even more pronounced after her first encounter with the Ne...

We’re excited to share this follow-up interview with Raffaella Bruzzi. Our first conversation with them took place in 2022, and now, two years later, we’ve had the privilege of reconnecting. This second interview delves deeper into their evolving journey, showcasing how their art and perspective have grown over time.

If you missed our first interview with Raffaella Bruzzi, please take a look at it here. It offers a wonderful introduction to their creative world and artistic vision.

Q. Over the past two years, have there been any changes in your artistic approach or style? What influenced those changes?

A. Over the past two years, my artistic approach has naturally shifted, gravitating more toward landscapes, particularly those showcasing serene skies. This transition reflects a need for calm and balance in my own life, especially after such turbulent global times. The skies in my paintings have become a way to explore lightness and peace, capturing a sense of openness and possibility. They reflect a newfound clarity—both visually and emotionally—that has enriched my creative expression.

This change was not intentional at first, but as I painted, I found myself drawn to these tranquil, expansive landscapes, using them to express a more optimistic outlook. The sky, for me, has become a symbol of hope and resilience, a theme that has deeply influenced my artistic evolution. The interplay of light and shadow has also taken on a more significant presence, adding depth and dimension to my work and emphasizing the contrasts between optimism and uncertainty.

This period of personal and artistic growth has been profoundly transformative, and I look forward to discovering how this journey will further influence my perspective and artistic expression.

Q. Over the past two years, in your recent exhibitions or social media posts, have you received any audience reactions or feedback about your work that stood out to you?

A. Over the past two years, the feedback I’ve received from audiences—both at exhibitions and on social media—has been deeply moving and unexpectedly affirming. Many viewers have shared how my work evokes a sense of calm and grounding, mirroring the emotional balance I seek to convey. One comment that particularly stood out came from a viewer who described my skies as "a breath of fresh air," offering them a momentary escape from the pressures of daily life. Another shared how the openness of my skies symbolized hope and clarity during a challenging personal period, which reinforced my belief in the healing potential of art.

A recurring theme in the feedback is the sense of stillness my work inspires. One visitor mentioned that standing before one of my paintings felt like the world had stopped turning, allowing them to truly pause and breathe. Another described the experience as akin to a meditative state, comparing it to a "séance of yoga" where they could reconnect with themselves. One of the most touching moments was learning that a particular piece now hangs in a psychologist’s office, where it serves as a calming presence for clients, helping them feel at ease as they navigate difficult emotions.

These reflections have profoundly shaped my understanding of how art can create shared spaces for healing, introspection, and connection. Knowing that my work offers viewers moments of peace and tranquility has deepened my commitment to creating pieces that foster this therapeutic, almost timeless, experience.

Q. Have there been any changes in your methods or tools? How do you see the impact of technological advancements on your work?

A. While I previously explored mixed media and bolder, more dynamic textures, I now focus on oil as my primary medium. That said, my past techniques remain influential—particularly in my use of spatulas and my focus on building layers. These approaches allow me to create rich, textured works that balance structure with a sense of openness.

Q. Over the past two years, has there been a change in the message of your work, or has it remained the same? What emotions do you hope the audience will experience through your pieces?

A. The message of my work has grown and deepened over time. Earlier, my pieces were often more energetic, conveying raw emotion through bold textures and mixed media. Now, my focus has shifted to themes of calmness, reflection, and connection with nature. Through my landscapes, I aim to capture a sense of quiet beauty and inspire viewers to lose themselves in the moment. This evolution reflects my desire to encourage a pause from the busyness of life, offering a space for contemplation and wonder.

I hope my paintings evoke a blend of emotions—calmness, introspection, and above all, a lovely feeling of being lost within the work. I want viewers to feel as though they’ve stepped into another world, where they can wander freely and immerse themselves in the serenity and depth of the piece. My use of layers and textures is designed to create this sense of discovery, encouraging the audience to explore the subtleties of the work and find their own connection to it.
